Named for a region of ancient Japan. According to a Wei-dynasty Chinese historical book, there were more than 70,000 houses in Yamatai. Himiko, the queen of Yamatai, dispatched an envoy to the ancient China in 238. There is no record of Yamatai (or Himiko) in any Japanese historical document, and the site of the city has not yet been located. (M 22504) _ _.
