Peru, on the west coast of South America, is dominated by the great Andes mountain ranges, and it extends east to include the headwaters of the Amazon river. The country has been the home of several Andean civilisations, notably the Incas. Lake Titicaca {see planet (1801)} on the southern border is the world’s highest body of fresh water. (M 42671) _ _.
