Albert Jansen (1940-2004), first director of The Hague Planetarium, was an exceptional teacher and talented experimenter. Living later in South Africa, he built a private observatory for use by advanced amateur astronomers. Shortly before his death he published Star Maps for Southern Africa, the first southern night-sky guide.
