Mikhail Alexandrovich Smirnov (1954-2006), on the staff of the Institute of Astronomy of the Russian Academy of Sciences, studied the minor bodies of the solar system, artificial satellites and the evolution of galaxies. He also made a contribution to popular astronomy in Russia. The name was suggested by S. I. Barabanov.
