Jean-Paul Sartre (1905–1980), French novelist and the exponent of Existentialism, used his pen his entire life for the defense of individual freedom and human dignity. His masterwork L≐Etre et le Néant (1943) confronts “human consciousness” with “being”. He won the 1964 Noble Prize for literature, but refused to accept it. (M 40706) _ _.
