The author, composer and theologian Martin Rinckart (1586-1649) underwent the horrors of the Thirty Years' War. In 1648, when the Peace of Westphalia was negotiated, all Europe began to sing his composition Nun danket alle Gott (“Now thank we all our God”). This became an international ecumenical hymn.
