Willem I, Prince van Oranje-Nassau (1533-1584), led the Netherlands provinces in their war of liberation against Spain during 1568-1648. “The Father of the Fatherland” was assassinated and is entombed in the Nieuwe Kerk in Delft. The Dutch national anthem, the Wilhelmus, was written in his honor.
