Luigi Pirandello (1867-1936) was a Sicilian writer who suffered from personal tragedy, leading him to explore madness, illusion and isolation. In 1925 he received the French Legion of Honor. In his well-known play Henri IV Pirandello's protagonist loses his mind, after falling from a horse.
