Carl Peter Thunberg (1743-1828), one of the last pupils of Linnaeus, is considered the greatest botanist of his time. In 1770 he joined Dutch botanists on a journey to Japan. In the Cape area of South Africa, he collected more than 3000 new species. He wrote the first guide to Japanese flora, which made him famous in Japan.
