Jean-Maurice-Emile Baudot (1845-1903) invented a telegraphic code in 1874 that encoded each letter of the alphabet as a series of “on-or-off” signals. Because each signal has the same duration, this system is more efficient than Morse code, and it still used in telecommunications today. The name was suggested by R. S. McMillan.
