Named in memory of William H. Wright (1871–1959), a pioneer in astrophysics who was on the Lick Observatory staff from 1897 to 1944 and the Director from 1935 to 1942. His last project was the design and construction of the 20-inch Carnegie double astrograph with which the recent discoveries of asteroids and comets are by-products of the proper motion program which he had conceived.
