Named for the city on whose outskirts the Purple Mountain {see planet  (3444)} Observatory is located. On the southern bank of the Yangtze River in central eastern China, Nanking served as China’s capital during several imperial periods prior to the 15th century. It is the capital of Kiangsu {see planet  (2077)} province of the People’s Republic today. (M 4786) _ _.
