Named in honor of Luiz Eduardo da Silva Machado { –1992}, director of the Valongo Observatory and professor at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, codeveloper with the discoverer of the program of astrometry of minor planets and comets at the European Southern Observatory.
