Constant Permeke (1886-1952), a Belgian painter and sculptor, was a leading figure of Flemish expressionism. Wounded in action during World War I he was hospitalized in the United Kingdom, where he started painting colorful English landscapes. Back in Belgium he immortalized fishermen and farmers at work.
