Named in honor of Nikolaj Mikhailovich Shakhovskoj (1930– ), astrophysicist at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory, an authority in stellar polarimetry and photometry, known for his research of variable cosmic objects of diverse types, including eruptive stars, active galaxies, x-ray binaries and flare stars, as well as comets and minor planets.
