Named for Wade Richard Butler (1949– ), a friend of the discoverer. Son of the famous “bare-foot” bushwalker Dot Butler, he had a long-time interest in the bush and remote places. After graduating in engineering, he overwintered in Antarctica working in cosmic-ray physics. His romantic passion for astronomy brought him to the Warrumbungle Mountains, in the shadow of Siding Spring, where he and his wife Margaret, with many friends, built a home and an observatory. In December 1995 he disappeared during a solo bushwalk in a very rugged part of southeastern Tasmania. This minor planet places Wade Butler in the sky with his children Lyra, Rigel, Leo and Eric Antares Butler, as he would have wished. (M 29143) _ _.
