Named in memory of Manfred von Ardenne (1907–1997), German inventor and researcher in various fields, especially known as a pioneer in television and radio engineering. His early interests in astronomy stimulated his enthusiasm for science and technology, and he emphasized the educational value of astronomy for young people.
