Cortina d´ Ampezzo (6500 inhabitants, altitude 12 300 m) is the most important town in the Dolomites, the spectacular rocky mountains in the Alps, and the most famous holiday resort in Italy. It hosted the 1956 Winter Olympics. In its area is located the Col Druscié Astronomical Observatory.
