Named in memory of Alan P. Lenham (1930–1996), British research scientist at the Royal College of Science in Shrivenham and an amateur astronomer whose careful observations of the moon and planets caught the attention of Gerard Kuiper {see planet  (1776)}, who invited him to spend some time at Yerkes Observatory. In 1958, using the 2.1-m telescope at the McDonald Observatory, Lenham made a superb drawing of a region on Mars now called Vallis Marineris. (M 30098) _ _.
