Nikolaus von Kues (Nicolaus Cusanus, 1401-1464), born near Trier, was a theologian, mathematician, scholar, experimental scientist and influential philosopher. He stressed the incomplete nature of man's knowledge of God and of the universe. His paper Perfectio mathematica (1458) anticipates infinitesimal methods.
