Named in memory of the German geologist Johann Gottlob Lehmann (1719–1767), who made important contributions to stratigraphy, the study of order and sequence in bedded sedimentary rocks. Educated originally at the University of Wittenberg as a medical doctor, he soon discovered that his real field of interest was mines and mining. He successfully explained the origin of mineral deposits in mines and recognized that rocks do not fall in haphazard positions but form a historical sequence, thereby supplying a strong argument against the biblical diluvian theory.
