Jan Anthoniszoon van Riebeeck (1619–1677), formerly an assistant surgeon, was sent by the Dutch authorities to southern Africa in 1652 to establish at Table Bay a fort and provisioning station for ships traveling to the East Indies. The station grew to become Cape Town. (M 47165) _ _.
