Francesco Caccioppoli (1855-1904) directed the Naval Institute in Procida, near Napoli, and was a passionate observer of the sky. Renato Caccioppoli (1904-1959) was an outstanding mathematician who carried out seminal work on linear and nonlinear differential equations. The name was suggested by E. Perozzi.
