Named in honor of John L. Climenhaga, first head of physics at the University of Victoria, on the occasion of his seventieth birthday. Known for his work on the C12/C13 abundance ratio in carbon stars and for studies of line blanketing and microturbulence in late-type stars, he has also long had an interest in cometary spectra. On his retirement in 1982 the University’s Observatory was named in his honor, and among the Observatory’s activities is the only Canadian program of astrometric observations of comets and minor planets.
