Gemma Frisius (Gemma Phrysius, Gemma Reyneri, 1508-1555) born in Dokkum, Friesland, studied in Leuven, Belgium, as a geographer, scientist and physician. He devised new globes, described how an accurate clock could be used to determine longitude and improved the astrolabe. Mercator was one of his students.
