Nicaragua is the largest country in the Central American isthmus. It is bordered in the west by the Pacific Ocean and in the east by the Caribbean Sea. In 1821 it achieved its independence from Spain. Originally, the country was inhabited by several indigenous peoples related to the Aztec and Maya.
