James Joseph Sylvester (1814–1897) studied at Cambridge and was the founder, together with Cayley {see planet  (16755)}, of the theory of algebraic invariants. He taught at University College, London; at Johns Hopkins University (1877–1883), where he helped establish a graduate program in mathematics; and finally at Oxford. (M 40711) _ _.
