The Kamchatka peninsula, between the Pacific Ocean and the sea of Okhotsk, was investigated by S. P. Krasheninnikov during 1735-1741. A belt of 160 valcanoes, of which about 30 are active, stretches along its shore. Very sparsely populated, the region is one of the few remaining pristine wilderness areas in the world.
