Named in honor of Carl Adam Wilhelm Schalén {1902–1993} of the Lund Institute of Astronomy. Sometime director of the Lund Observatory, he is noted for his work on interstellar reddening. Some of his research was made using plates taken with the Schmidt-Väisälä telescope at Uppsala. (M 3930) _ _.
