During his later years, the outstanding French novelist Honoré de Balzac (1799-1850) stayed at the estate of his wife, countess Evelina Hanska, in a small village of Verkhivnya, Ukraine. Here he wrote La Maratre, Les Paysans and a part of the unfinished La comédie humaine.
