Berlin-born Bruno Walter (1876–1962; originally B. W. Schlesinger), great German-American conductor, was known particularly for interpretations of Mozart, Bruckner and Mahler {see, respectively, planets  (1034),  (3955) and  (4406)}. He lived in exile after 1938, endeavoring to preserve a German mind and culture. After World War II he conducted in Europe again. (M 41574) _ _.
