Named in honor of the late Prof. E. Hertzsprung {1873–1967}, who was Director of the Leiden Observatory from 1934 till 1945. A well-known authority in the field of astronomical photometry, he initiated the Leiden Variable Star Survey of the southern Milky Way, during which survey many asteroids and some comets were found.
