Named in memory of Frederick Gardner Cottrell in the centennial year of his birth. Cottrell organized the Research Corporation in 1912 and provided an initial endowment consisting of his valuable electrostatic precipitation rights for the United States east of the Rocky Mountains. Grants from the Research Corporation have been of great assistance in many fields of science, and they have made possible the purchase of the measuring engine used in the minor planet program at the Goethe Link Observatory.
