The district of Emilchyne in Ukraine is known as the birthplace of Vladimir Khilchenko (b. 1931), in charge of the testing of space missions at Baikonur during 1967--1970, as well as of Nina Matvienko (b. 1947), an outstanding Ukrainian folk singer.
