In medieval times, the northern Bavarian city of Nürnberg was the residence of famous scholars such as Dürer, Stoss and Regiomontanus. This minor planet is being named on the occasion of the inauguration of a new 0.6-m telescope at the Nürnberg Observatory in Oct. 2004. The name was suggested by E. Wunder.
