Named for the Japanese new era, or “Gengo”, which began on 1989 Jan. 8. Heisei was taken from an old Chinese book Shihchi by Ssu-ma Chien and from Shu Ching, one of the Chinese Five Classics. The name embodies the hope that peace will be achieved inside and outside the country, on the earth and in the heavens. This minor planet was discoverered in the first year of Heisei. The Christian era 1990 corresponds to Japanese era 2650. (M 16444) _ _.
