Named in memory of the great French chemist and microbiologist Louis Pasteur (1822–1895), who proved that fermentation and disease are caused by micro-organisms. His invention of the principle of immunization was successfully applied for the first time against rabies in 1885. In 1888 the celebrated Pasteur Institute was established in Paris, and the process of pasteurization is well known throughout the whole world. (M 19340) _ _.
