Named in honor of Ikunosuke Arai (1836–1909), the first director of the Central Meteorological Observatory. In his early days, he contributed to the triangulation of Hokkaido. In 1887 he observed the total eclipse of the sun at Sanjo, Niigata, and successfully photographed the event. (M 22506) _ _.
