Daihoji, located in the north of the town of Kuma Kogen, was founded in 701 following an order by the Emperor Monmu. Since the visit of the Buddhist priest Kobo Daishi in early ninth century, Daihoji has been the 44th destination for the Shikoku pilgrimage.
