Named in memory of Max Pauly (1849–1917) of the Jena Carl Zeiss optical works. The genial Pauly was a good friend of Max Wolf. Pauly ground the 10-inch lens of the Bruce telescope, “das Juwel des Königstuhls”. Under his supervision, many large telescopes were produced for European as well as American Observatories.
