Named for the state of Sachsen, the richest German region in the 15th and 16th centuries. The zenith of the Saxon electors (Dresden baroque) was during the reign of Friedrich August I (August the Strong, 1694–1733). The most important towns in the territory are Dresden (the capital, see planets  (263) and  (3053)), Leipzig, Chemnitz and Zwickau. (M 23793) _ _.
