Named in honor of Tobias C. (Toby) Owen (1936– ) of the Institute for Astronomy of the University of Hawaii. Known for his broad work in planetary science, Owen has productively used chemical ratios and isotopic ratios from planetary atmospheres, from meteorites and from comets to understand the early solar system and the processes of formation of comets and planetary atmospheres. He has also played an important role in searching for and identifying new species in reflection spectra of ices on planetary surfaces. (M 27461) _ _.
