Named for the ship that was built specially for polar research. It was used in expeditions of the Arctic and Antarctic regions by the Norwegian explorers F. Nansen, O. Sverdrup, O. Wisting and R. Amundsen. Fram is preserved at the Fram Museum in Oslo, Norway.
