Named in honor of Shinya Obi (b. 1925), professor emeritus of the University of Tokyo. In addition to his numerous research papers, he has published many popular astronomy books. He has just retired as president of the University of the Air, which educates via communication satellites. Name proposed by the discoverers following a suggestion by A. Fujii and A. Abe.
