Named for the Roman emperor Marcus Ulpius Trajanus (53–117). Trajan was adopted by emperor Nerva and became his successor in 98. He expanded the Roman empire to Mesopotamia, Assyria and Armenia. In his time the Roman empire had its greatest expansion. The Trajan column in the Forum contains his ashes in a golden urn. (M 30802) _ _.
