Julius Robert Mayer (1814–1878), a German doctor and naturalist, created the formula for the transformation of mechanical energy into heat. In 1842 he stated the law of energy conservation. This received little notice until his work was extended by Helmholtz {see planet  (11573)}. (M 39656) _ _.
